A Final Reflection on Building a More Inclusive Digital Europe

As the IncludeME+ project comes to a close this month, we look back on two years of collaboration, research, learning, and storytelling dedicated to making digital media a force for inclusion, dialogue, and peace across Europe.

In today’s digital landscape, the way we communicate online has a profound impact on our societies. Disinformation, polarisation, online hostility, and social fragmentation continue to challenge democratic participation and community cohesion across Europe. At the same time, digital media also offers enormous potential: it can connect communities, amplify underrepresented voices, and create spaces for dialogue and understanding.

This belief has been at the heart of IncludeME+.

Over the past two years, partners from Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Spain, Turkey, and Ukraine have worked together to explore how digital media can support inclusion, civic engagement, and peacebuilding. As the project concludes, we are proud to leave behind a lasting legacy of freely accessible tools, research, and educational resources designed to support educators, media professionals, students, researchers, and civil society organisations across Europe and beyond.

Research That Connects Theory and Practice

One of the key achievements of IncludeME+ has been the development of a strong evidence base to better understand the relationship between digital media, inclusion, and social cohesion.

The project produced two complementary studies:

  • A Desk Research Report synthesising findings from eight country-level studies focused on misinformation, polarisation, digital exclusion, and policy gaps.
  • A Participatory Action Research Report capturing the lived experiences of diverse communities navigating digital conflict, exclusion, and online participation.

Together, these studies provide both analytical insight and practical understanding for anyone seeking to build more inclusive digital ecosystems.

The research highlights not only the challenges facing Europe’s digital spaces, but also the opportunities to create more responsible, participatory, and empathetic forms of communication.

A Training Programme Designed for Real-World Impact

Another major milestone of the project has been the creation of the Digital Media for Inclusive Peacebuilding Training Programme.

The programme consists of seven structured modules developed to equip participants with practical skills and critical awareness in areas such as:

  • Analysing digital content critically
  • Identifying and challenging misinformation
  • Reducing polarisation and fostering inclusive online dialogue
  • Promoting civic engagement through responsible communication
  • Supporting peacebuilding and social cohesion in communities
  • Designed for educators, students, media professionals, and civil society organisations, the training programme combines theory with practical tools and interactive learning resources that can be directly applied in educational and community settings.

More importantly, the programme reflects the collaborative and inclusive spirit of IncludeME+: learning through dialogue, participation, and shared experiences.

Documented Stories: Giving Space to Human Experiences

Perhaps one of the most meaningful outputs of the project has been the collection of Documented Stories created throughout the initiative.

These stories bring together statements, reflections, and experiences from people across Europe, showcasing how digital storytelling can help bridge divides, strengthen communities, and encourage empathy and mutual understanding.

They also serve as an important reminder of the responsibility carried by digital content creators and media professionals. Media has the power not only to inform, but also to shape perceptions, influence social attitudes, and impact community relationships.

The stories demonstrate that when used responsibly, digital media can become a powerful tool for inclusion and positive social change.

A Lasting Legacy Beyond the Project

Although IncludeME+ is formally concluding this month, the project’s mission and outputs remain highly relevant.

The challenges surrounding misinformation, exclusion, polarisation, and social cohesion continue to evolve. The need for inclusive digital practices, media literacy, and constructive online dialogue is more urgent than ever.

For this reason, all project outputs remain freely accessible online for anyone who wishes to continue using, sharing, or building upon them.

Whether you are:

  • an educator searching for practical teaching materials,
  • a researcher exploring digital inclusion,
  • a media professional interested in responsible communication,
  • or a community organisation working to strengthen social cohesion,

IncludeME+ offers resources designed to support meaningful and lasting impact.

Thank You to Everyone Who Contributed

This project would not have been possible without the collaboration, commitment, and contributions of all partners, participants, educators, researchers, storytellers, and communities involved throughout the journey.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who shared their expertise, experiences, and perspectives with us.

As we close this chapter, we hope the ideas, tools, and conversations initiated through IncludeME+ will continue to inspire more inclusive, participatory, and peace-oriented digital environments across Europe.

Although the project may be ending, the work towards a more inclusive digital future continues.
